Guitar Connection Troubleshooting Tips

Confirm your guitar is connected

  • Step 1: Plug the USB connection from your guitar (or wireless dongle) into the computer. Turn on your guitar (this may not be necessary). If this is the first time you've plugged your guitar into your computer then Windows should recognize that you've added a new device and begin installing a driver (this can take a while). If Windows doesn't install a driver then try unplugging your USB connection and then plug it back in, or try a different USB slot. If you've already installed the driver then Windows won't do much.

  • Step 2: When the driver installation is complete you should be able to see your guitar listed as a game controller in your computer: for Win XP and Vista this list is in Control Panel, Game Controllers; for Win 7 it's in Control Panel, Devices and Printers (right click your guitar in the list of devices and select "Game controller settings"). Do you see your guitar listed as a game controller? If not then Windows can't see your guitar. Did the driver install successfully? Sometimes it takes a minute before your guitar will be added to the list.

  • Step 3: Windows may be able to see your guitar but does it work right? From your current place in the Control Panel, select your guitar and then click the properties button. Now, when you press the buttons on your guitar, you should see the red lights in this dialog turn on and off (don't worry about whether the lights match the buttons you press). If nothing happens then Windows sees your guitar as a connected device but can't understand what it's saying.

Confirm the plugin is installed

  • Step 4: Visit our plugin page here: http://www.irok2.com/plugin and install as directed. When you refresh that page does it say that the plugin is installed? If so, then start up iRok2 and see if your guitar works. If not, then step 5.

  • Step 5: Does the browser list the iRok2 plugin? In Firefox, select the Tools menu, Add-ons, Extensions and you should see the "iRok2 Guitar Plugin" there. Make sure it's enabled. In Internet Explorer, select the Tools menu, Manage add-ons, Toolbars and Extensions and you should see the "JoystickAX Control" for iRok2. Make sure it's enabled. Sometimes you need to wait a while before the plugin shows up in the browser. Wait a minute or two and try restarting the browser to see if that helps.

If nothing else works

  • Reboot your computer

  • Unplug the USB connector, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in

  • Turn your guitar on and try to get it to sync to the wireless dongle

  • Restart your browser

  • Uninstall and then reinstall the plugin. In Firefox, just go to the Extensions list (as explained above), select the iRok2 plugin and click Uninstall. Internet Explorer is more complicated. Go to the Manage Add-ons page (as explained above), and select the "JoystickAX Control" for iRok2. Next, disable it by clicking the Disable button at the bottom of the dialog and then the Close button. Restart your browser then come back to the Manage Add-ons dialog. Select the "Show" pull-down menu on the mid-left of this dialog and choose "All add-ons". The iRok2 plugin should once again be visible in the list on the right. Now, right click on the "JoystickAX Control" in the list and select the More Information option. Click the Remove button at the very bottom of the dialog. Close the dialog. Done. Phew!
