Guitar Compatibility

How do you know if your plastic guitar will work with iRok2? Quick summary: if you rock out on a PS3 or bought Rock Band for any console then you're all set. Just plug the USB wireless dongle into your computer, install the iRok2 plug-in and rok out.

If not, then check the chart below. To see if your guitar is compatible with iRok2, first choose the row in the table corresponding to your game console. Next, find where this row intersects the column listing your Rock Band or Guitar Hero game. If the square is shaded green then your guitar should work fine in iRok2 without any additional hardware. If not, then you may need to purchase an adapter to connect the guitar to your PC.

1 The Nintendo Wii guitars for Guitar Hero communicate over Bluetooth through the Wiimote. If your computer has Bluetooth built in then you could be ok, otherwise you will need to purchase a Bluetooth adapter. Bluetooth connectivity can be tricky. In addition, you will need to install special software for your PC to interface properly with the guitar. Difficulty level: high.
2 The Xbox 360 communicates wirelessly using a closed protocol supported only by the Microsoft Xbox 360™ Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows®. After purchasing this adapter and installing the required drivers your plastic guitar should work great in iRok2. Difficulty level: low.
3 Guitar Hero I and II for PS2 both used wired connections to the specialized controller port on the console. An adapter which converts this port to USB is needed for connection to a PC. Once installed, the adapter allows your guitar to communicate directly with iRok2. Difficulty level: really low

Other notes:

  • All guitars from The Beatles: Rock Band work identically to the Fender Stratocaster (Hofner Bass, Rickenbacker 325 and Gretsch Duo Jet)
  • Guitar Hero World Tour, Guitar Hero Metallica, Guitar Hero Smash Hits and Band Hero all use the same Generi-caster type guitar
  • All guitars require the installation of a small iRok2 plugin to communicate with your PC and the iRok2 application
  • All guitars are wireless except where noted
